The Leigh UTC Year 6 Visit

Students visit The Leigh UTC

As part of an exciting educational initiative, all year 6 children recently had the opportunity to visit a local secondary school, Leigh University Technical College (UTC), where they explored the world of mechanical engineering and design. Their task for the day was to create their very own mechanical toys using woodworking skills and state-of-the-art equipment. This hands-on experience was not only educational but also a great way for the children to develop essential problem-solving and creativity skills.

A Warm Welcome to the UTC

Upon arrival at the UTC, the children were warmly greeted by staff and students who guided them through the college’s impressive facilities. The UTC, known for its focus on technical education, is equipped with cutting-edge machinery, including woodworking tools, laser cutters, and 3D printers. The children were thrilled to discover a space dedicated to bringing their creative ideas to life.

Getting Creative with Woodwork

The day’s challenge was to design a mechanical toy—something that could move, spin, or even perform simple actions, all powered by basic mechanical principles. Armed with pencils, paper, and plenty of enthusiasm, the children began sketching their ideas, brainstorming different designs, and thinking about how they could incorporate movement into their toys.

With the guidance of UTC students and staff, the children were introduced to various woodworking techniques. They learned how to safely use tools such as saws, files and sanders, and how to shape and assemble the pieces of their toy. Many of them had never used these tools before, so it was a valuable opportunity to learn practical skills while having fun.
