How to Grow a Sunflower

Student completing their work on paper

This week, the Little Birds have been learning about plants. They inquired about the different parts of a plant and flower. They learned new vocabulary for each section of a flower: roots, stem, leaves and flower.  Little Birds then drew diagrams of a sunflower plant. The Little Birds painted and made prints with real leaves and flowers.  This helped  develop their understanding of the world around them and how things are changing/growing.  Look at the amazing life cycle representation drawing of a sunflower!

Little Birds enjoyed planting their own sunflower seeds, which they have taken home to care for and watch grow.  They thought about the needs of the seed, remembering it needed water, sun and soil to promote its growth.

The stories we have enjoyed listening to this week are ‘The Tiny Seed’, ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ and ‘Ten Seeds’.

Some of us were authors, making up our own stories about a sunflower seed.
