Caring for our chicks!

Students looking at an egg incubator

This week, the Little Birds have been learning how to care for the chicks in the brooder box. The children observed the chicks with fascination each day, watching them grow and develop over two weeks. During group time, the children had the opportunity to gently handle the chicks — which they absolutely loved!  This experience helped them to develop a greater understanding of living things and the world around them.

“It’s so cute!”, “It’s so soft!”, “It’s so fluffy!”

We stayed very quiet so we could hear the chicks chirping.  The Little Birds also participated in craft activities, creating representations of the chicks using a variety of materials such as feathers, crayons and paint.

We read the story of The Ugly Duckling and reflected on the importance of being kind to others. The children also talked positively about the similarities and differences between one another. One child even brought in their own copy of the story to compare with the version we read at nursery!

Our Local Walk and Visit to the Pleasance

Another exciting activity this week was a local walk to St Edmund’s Pleasance. The Little Birds explored the environment and listened carefully to the different sounds in their community.

They heard birds chirping in the trees, saw dogs being walked by their owners and admired the view of the town from the lookout point. They also noticed the beautiful trees and even watched the grass being cut by a special machine — all from a safe distance!

Well done to the Little Birds for being so principled and knowledgeable during their adventure.
