How do we grow turnips?

Students playing in planting boxes

This week, the Little Birds have been inquiring into how to grow turnips to explore their understanding of the world.  They used their own imagination to act out the story of The Enormous Turnip using small world characters and a real turnip, inside a tray of soil.

The children had the opportunity to listen to different versions of The Enormous Turnip story. They compared them using a range of vocabulary to talk about the similarities and differences.

They learnt a new song “There’s a great big turnip at the bottom of my field”, which was sung with enthusiasm.

The children have also been drawing pictures of  the turnip stories.

Action

A pupil and their parents kindly donated a raspberry cane to plant in our nursery garden for the Little Birds to care for and watch it grow. Thank you.

The Little Birds were very excited to share pictures of their sunflower seeds and plants growing at home to their friends at whole circle class time.
