How Can We Write a Letter?

Students partaking in an activity

The Little Birds looked at the book ‘Click Clack Moo’. The story was about cows typing letters using a typewriter, so we decided to inquire into the different ways to write a letter.  The children enjoyed using the typewriter  in the role play area and typing on the keyboards and laptops.

They made words from wooden letters, matching to the ones written down, to make the book title we were focusing on.  We learnt how to handle books carefully. We learnt about the importance of print and illustrations in books and how these develop our book skills.

Mrs Ellson made up a song about being writers to the tune Frere Jacque that the children enjoyed singing.

  • Verse1:
    ‘We are writers,
    We are writers,
    We can write,
    We can write.
    Using pens and pencils,
  • Verse 2:
    Using a computer
  • Verse 3:
    Using a typewriter.
    Using pens and pencils,
Making our marks, Making our marks.

We had the opportunity to use ipads to type our name on. The practitioners spoke about being safe on the internet when giving out personal details, this linked with our online safety learning.

We wrote letters to our families and friends as well as making our names from magnetic letters.  This developed our literacy and physical skills.

Other books the children enjoyed listening to were:

  • The Jolly Postman
  • The Day the Crayons Quit

The children were also very excited to explore the  mud in our sensory tray. They made up their own stories about the farm animals following on from the book ‘Click Clack Moo’.
