On Remembrance Day, Leigh Academy Dartford came together as a community to honour the bravery and sacrifices of those who served in conflicts past. This poignant day was filled with reflection, learning, and heartfelt commemoration as students and staff paid their respects to the heroes who have served to protect our freedom.
Historical Artefacts Bring History to Life
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for the children to engage with genuine historical artefacts, including war medals and gas masks. These items brought history vividly to life, giving children a tangible connection to the past and a deeper understanding of the lives of soldiers who fought in the World Wars. Seeing these pieces of history helped the children to appreciate the experiences of those who served, adding a personal touch to their learning about sacrifice, bravery and resilience.
Reflecting in Silence
As the clock struck 11, the academy community observed a two-minute silence, standing in unity and respect for those who have fallen. This powerful moment allowed children and staff to pause, reflect and honour the memory of those who gave their lives for peace and freedom. The silence spoke volumes, serving as a reminder of the significance of remembrance and the importance of never forgetting the sacrifices of past generations.
Supporting the Royal British Legion
To contribute to the important work of the Royal British Legion, children wore poppies- raising funds to support veterans and their families. The poppy has long been a symbol of remembrance and wearing it allowed the Leigh Academy Dartford community to visually show their respect and solidarity with those who have served.
Learning the Importance of Remembrance
In a special assembly, children learned about the meaning of Remembrance Day and the impact of the World Wars on both individuals and society. The assembly aimed to help children understand why remembrance is not only about reflecting on the past but also about learning from history to build a peaceful future.
Representing Leigh Academy Dartford at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy
This year, the Head Boy, Head Girl and their deputies had the honour of representing Leigh Academy Dartford at a remembrance service hosted by Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy. As part of the service, they laid a poppy wreath, symbolising respect and gratitude from the whole Leigh Academy Dartford community. This event was especially significant as it allowed these young leaders to represent their school and pay their respects alongside a wider community.
Meeting a War Veteran
Following the remembrance service, the children had a rare and memorable opportunity to speak with a war veteran, gaining firsthand insights into the experiences and sacrifices of those who served. They shared tea and cake, listening to stories and learning more about the bravery and resilience that defined wartime experiences. This encounter was an invaluable reminder of the human side of history and the sacrifices made by individuals to ensure the freedoms enjoyed today.
At Leigh Academy Dartford, Remembrance Day was a day of unity, learning and respect. Through these events, children left with a profound sense of gratitude and a commitment to carrying forward the lessons of history. By remembering and honouring the past, they are inspired to build a brighter, more peaceful future.
