What happened during Earth Day at Nursery?

To begin the new term, the Little Birds learned about our planet and the importance of Earth Day.  They talked about how to care for minibeasts and birds in their environment and in their own gardens. Together, we decided to get some bird seed and fill up seed feeders to hang on the trees. The children also made their own bird feeders using cardboard tubes, honey and seed.  In the garden, the children explored natural materials and created a beautiful colour collage using items they found in nature.

They also searched for minibeasts and placed the bug homes they had made at home into the garden, helping to provide shelter for the creatures in different weather conditions. We began building a large bug hotel using a crate and natural materials. These activities helped the children deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Some children created their own stories about Earth Day, which helped enhance their literacy, imagination and communication skills.  Other creative activities included making collaged Earth outlines using various coloured tissue papers.  We also listened to stories about recycling and how we can take care of our world.
