How do we grow turnips?

A group of four Nursery pupils are pictured sitting down together, alongside their class teacher, playing with some toys.

This week the Little Birds have been inquiring into how to grow turnips to explore our understanding of the world.  We used our own imagination to act out the story of The Enormous Turnip using small world characters and a swede to represent the turnip.

We listened to different versions of the story and compared them using a range of vocabulary to talk about the similarities and differences. Little Birds also enjoyed wearing role labels when pretending to be the characters from the turnip story. We developed our literacy, imagination and social skills and thoroughly enjoyed learning through play.

This week we sang with enthusiasm the song “There’s a great big turnip at the bottom of my field”.

We have also been writing stories about the turnip and sharing these with our friends and the practitioners during whole class time. Many of us read our own stories to the class giving them a real sense of achievement.
