What Happened During Science and Art Week in the Nursery?

Little Birds have had a great time exploring science and art week!

This week, Little Birds inquired about the artist Takashi Murakami; we found out information about him, where he is from and closely observed pieces of artwork Takashi had created. We looked at Japan on Google Earth in comparison to where we live and our school. We had fun and learnt new creative skills when developing our own representations of this art.

Artist Takashi Murakami. He is a man with a beard and glasses, wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, is standing in front of a colorful, abstract painting.
This image shows a cartoonish mushroom character with a blue and yellow cap and a blue and pink spotted stem. The mushroom cap has two small, black-dot eyes and a small mouth, giving it a cute, friendly appearance.
This image is a repeating pattern of the smiling, colorful daisy-like flowers seen in other images. The background is filled with these flowers in various sizes and orientations.
This image shows a large, colorful artwork resembling a stylized, abstract face or character with a wide, smiling mouth. It has large, round shapes at the top that look like ears, and the artwork features many swirling, eye-like elements and bright colors on a beige background.
This image displays a single, large, smiling daisy-like flower with a yellow center and petals in a rainbow of colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, pink). The background is white.
This image features a spherical object covered entirely in colorful, smiling daisy-like flowers. The flowers are in various colors like pink, white, green, blue, and purple, and each has a yellow center with a smiling face.
This image shows a pattern with colorful four-pointed star shapes and circular motifs with eyes, resembling the style of Louis Vuitton's monogram mixed with artistic elements. The background is black.

Little Birds were inspired to decorate flowers and make flowers with various collage materials and paper. We made a large scale painting using different sized brushes and printing with bottle lids and shapes.

Two young children, a girl and a boy, are standing in front of a large screen that displays images of the smiling daisy-like flowers. Both children are holding paper cutouts of similar multi-colored flowers.
A young girl, wearing a checkered school uniform and a yellow art smock, is standing at a table and painting. She is focused on her artwork, which depicts colorful shapes, possibly flowers, on a white sheet of paper. There are paintbrushes and a paint palette on the table.
A young girl, wearing a white collared shirt and a yellow art smock covered in paint, is standing and proudly holding up a white sheet of paper with a colorful painting on it. She is smiling at the camera.
A young girl with pigtails is smiling and holding a colorful paper flower craft. She is standing in front of a large screen displaying vibrant, stylized artwork with smiling flowers and cartoon characters.
A young girl with blonde hair, wearing a blue and white checkered dress, is smiling at the camera while holding a colorful paper craft that looks like a whimsical creature with multi-colored petals or wings.
A young boy, wearing a white polo shirt, is holding up a craft project that resembles a yellow caterpillar with light blue ears/antennae and a long, colorful body made of paper circles. He is looking directly at the camera with a serious expression.

We also created artwork on the iPads!

Little Birds carried out science experiments.

We were excited to make our own bubble wands of different shapes.

We inquired whether we could make different shaped bubbles from the wands created by us from various materials. We observed how they floated in the atmosphere.

A boy in a white polo shirt and dark shorts is outside on a green playground surface, blowing bubbles with a large, green bubble wand. In the background, there are colorful numbered mats on the ground.
A young boy, wearing a blue cardigan over a white collared shirt, is holding up a handmade toy airplane with white wings and a pink propeller-like attachment. He is looking at the camera.

A young boy, wearing a white polo shirt, is seated at a table and appears to be concentrating on a craft activity involving pipe cleaners or similar flexible materials. He is manipulating colorful shapes with his hands.
A young girl with her hair in two buns, wearing a blue long-sleeved top and a grey skirt, is playing with a small bubble wand, blowing bubbles. Another child's back is visible in the foreground. They are on a playground surface.

Little Birds enjoyed blowing bubbles to their friends as we stood in a circle, watching them float and then pop as they touched the floor.

A group of children are gathered around a girl who is blowing bubbles with a bubble wand. Some bubbles are visible in the air and near the children's hands. They are all looking at the bubbles.
A young girl in a blue top and grey trousers is standing and blowing bubbles with a pink bubble wand. Other children are standing in the background. The floor has yellow star decals.

The following day, we had to problem solve and complete the provocation about floating and sinking objects using real waste resources and objects from the class. We also talked about keeping the ocean and environment clean by always placing litter in the bin and recycling items as much as possible.

Two young boys, one in a white polo shirt and the other in a blue top, are leaning over a grey tub of water. The boy in the blue top is reaching into the water, possibly touching a brown, hexagonal object. They both seem engaged in the activity.
Two young boys, one in a white polo shirt and the other in a blue top, are standing beside a grey tub filled with water. A small, light-colored object is floating or resting at the bottom of the tub. The boy in the white shirt is smiling and looking at the object.
A young girl in a grey pinafore dress and white top is leaning over a grey tub filled with water and is submerging a green, spherical object in it with her hand. She appears to be focused on the activity.
A young girl with curly hair in a blue top is intently looking down into a clear plastic bowl filled with water, where a dark, oval-shaped object is visible at the bottom. A boy in a white polo shirt is standing next to her, also looking towards the bowl, but his gaze is directed more towards the viewer.

Little Birds listened to many exciting stories connected with colour, art and problem solving.

Two children's books are laid flat. The book on the left is "Mr Archimedes' Bath" by Pamela Allen, featuring an illustration of various animals in a bathtub. The book on the right is "Too Many Bubbles" by David Gibb and Dan Taylor, with an illustration of a dog covered in bubbles.
Two children's books are displayed. The book on the left is "Elmer" by David McKee, showing a patchwork elephant. The book on the right is "The Magic Paintbrush" by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Joel Stewart, depicting a person holding a paintbrush with a long, flowing stroke.

Well done Little Birds – amazing work!
