Learning about Police Officers and Firefighters in our Community

Outdoor learning environment

This week, Little Birds have been inquiring into how police officers and firefighters help us in the world in which we live. We have been developing our understanding of others in the community around us.

The children enjoyed the mini provocations which were set up in the environment both indoors and outside; they had to solve the crime scene by thinking of ideas as detectives and roleplaying as firefighters.

Some of the children enjoyed participating in imaginative play by dressing up as police officers and acting out scenarios. They developed their expressive skills.

To work on mathematics, the children practised counting and number recognition, the Little birds enjoyed learning a new number rhyme song called ‘Five police cars parked in a row’.  

Little Birds also spoke about calling 999 in an emergency to request help from the police or fire service. They identified and shared ideas about different scenarios in which they may need help. This developed their communication and listening skills.
